Clinic Presenter Jeff Rykiel

Jeff Rykiel is a Member of the Trinity River Division 3 of the Lone Star Region, NMRA. He has been a modeler, train enthusiast, for better than 40 years. He also is a journeyman wood worker, and has designed and built several rail related projects over the past decade. He currently is a Modular Model Railroader and has implemented his designs within his modeling group and within that group has built over 30 modules for the Operations Roadshow at the NMRA Convention. His Woodworking skills bring advanced technology into the form of building modules, benchwork, and storage solutions for the modeling industry.

CLINIC #1 of 4 - Module 101

This is an interactive clinic involving the basic elements of building modules to suit your needs. These include understanding wood properties, wood economics, joinery techniques, and fabrication procedures to ensure your project is as advanced as the technology above the rails. We will talk Span strength, proper fasteners, and benchwork design considerations.

CLINIC #2 of 4 - Risers and Corners

This is Part 2 of Module 101, the next evolution of module and benchwork construction to include how to determine rise, without doing a whole lot of math. This involves using the “StoryStick” approach to develop appropriate rise. Also in this clinics methods used for creating angled joinery for use on corners. Single, and 2-piece, corner construction techniques are discussed and demonstrated in full detail.

CLINIC #3 of 4 - Tunnels and Culverts

This is Part 3 of the Module 101 series that deals with Tunnels and culverts for your pike. Understanding the design elements of where to place your tunnels, maintenance and troubleshooting considerations, as well as, determining how to “Go below the track line" for effective strength, as well as scenery options. This clinic is interactive on using those design elements to aid in overall strength as well as lightweight design.

Clinic #4 of 4 - Module Connects and Transport Options

Clinic 4 takes into consideration the module moves between locations from trainshow to trainshow. It will also show options that are available to the module sections to determine a more innovative and interactive display while maintaining ease of use, transport, and setup/takedown considerations. Using alignment pins and options for wiring are included.
