Tom Pearson is a long time model railroader and a 52 year member of the NMRA. Tom moved to Texas in 1986. He is embarrassed to say that he hasn't completed the paperwork for anything in the Achievement Program, but he says that will change soon.
Tom purchased his first DCC system in the late 1990’s because he was building a walk around layout and using a centralized DC control panel just wasn’t going to work. As a saying goes, he wanted to operate trains instead of operating the layout.
Over the years Tom helped several modelers convert their layouts to DCC. He also prepared several electrical clinics including the setup and usage of DecoderPro. He says he is not a bits and bytes guy - just an experienced user who likes to explain things in ways everyone can understand.
The past few years Tom has been researching the Des Moines Union railroad so he can build a realistic portion of the railroad and operate like the prototype did.
Clinic #1 of 2 - Safe & Practical Wiring a Layout
Wiring Clinic synopsis
This clinic will cover safe and practical approaches for wiring a layout. This will include :
Dealing with 110 volt power
Locating Control system components
Choosing wire for track busses and track feeders
Separating the layout into zones for troubleshooting
Optimizing power pickup through turnouts
Soldering track feeders
Clinic #2 of 2 - Gathering Information to Build a Prototype Based Model Railroad
This clinic will present an understanding of the resources Tom Pearson used to gather information for his first and second prototype based model railroads. Rather than model something thing down to the last rivet, Tom chose to try to recreate the look and feel of the area, rolling stock and operations of the area he chose to model.
Although many railroads are now fallen flags, Tom has found a wealth of information is still available.
