Clinic Presenter Matthew K. Lentz

What if I told you that you could draw like the above with no artistic skill at all? Is that something you might be interested in? This is what we're going to learn in this clinic. Once upon a time when I was about 7 years old, I got an AHM Spirit of 76 train set for Christmas. My Dad made me a 4x4 foot square to put my circle of track and the buildings I would make with the Girder & Panel set. Eventually my Dad built me a 5x8 foot table with 2 built-in work benches in the basement. I made 2 levels and started building the AHM building kits. I've only a single photo of this layout in its final form before we took it down and moved. A few years later, I was in the Army and I started building blue box kits from the hobby shop near my base. I've always been on a tight budget and when I retired I kept that same work ethic and to this day I am first and foremost a scratch-builder. I got interested in this type of drawing when I got on the Achievement Program path. I keep lab books and I like to do these kinds of drawings for everything from benchwork to track planning. I've found this skill to be most useful when remodeling my own house. You will be able to visualize and describe through drawings a very wide variety of both modeling and structural elements that will take your skills to a whole new level!

CLINIC #1 of 2 - Design in Birdseye View

During the 19th and very early 20th Century various towns and cities across the United States employed special surveyor map-makers to create appealing presentations of their cities. These 3D drawings are from the point of view of a bird flying toward the city. These maps are exceptionally detailed and many of them can be found in the Library of Congress as panoramic views. Now most of you were taught in school the basics of perspective drawing using a vanishing point along a line on your paper. This is same principle employed by the mapmakers. However, today, we have an advantage in that we're able to use computer generated training paper. Using this type of paper allows anyone to draw plans and maps in a bird's eye view with just a pencil. We can learn to make maps, plans and drawings of a great many objects this way. We're going to do some drawing and make some things. You don't need any skill in drawing of any kind at all and you'll be making plans in no time. We'll also talk about Design as a process and the use of lab books in modeling. This clinic will be a great time for coffee and picking up a new skill.
